The Bunting Block was a bustling hub of businesses in 1895. The Bunting Building was home to the Central Nebraska National Bank, with William Bunting as president. Other businesses in this block included a grocery store, a saddlery, a millinery, a lumber and coal yard, and a steam elevator.
In July 1934, First National Bank acquired the assets of Central Nebraska National Bank and moved temporarily into the Bunting Building to allow for remodeling of the Wolfe Building. In this photograph from October 1934, you can see McDonald’s Cafe, which is the eventual location of Thomas Tavern.
In later years, the building was home to a Hinky Dinky grocery store in 1944 and then a Hometown IGA grocery store in 1973. Mike McClintic started the “Just a Buck” store in 1993. Sue Vidlak opened “Sue’s Just a Buck” in 2002.
The Bunting Building was demolished in 2019 and the new Bank of the Valley branch opened in September 2020.
