Schweser’s

5th & E, SE corner

The original Schweser’s store, founded by George Schweser, was constructed in 1886. George became a prominent businessman in the area, and his sons later joined the company. The People’s Banner in 1895 described the Schweser’s Store as the oldest establishment in the city, offering a vast selection of general merchandise.

There was eventually a chain of Schweser’s clothing stores located in cities across Nebraska. The David City Schweser’s store operated until 1968 and later became Novacek’s Department Store. Novacek’s closed in 1982. The Schweser’s chain itself has since gone out of business. The building currently houses several businesses and an apartment.
