Downtown Square

The county seat moved from Savannah to David City in 1873 after several contentious elections. The first county offices were in a wood building constructed on the southwest corner of 4th and E Street, including a jail to the west of the courthouse.
In 1890, a new courthouse was built in the center of the public square. Designed by architect William Gray of Lincoln, it featured Romanesque-style architecture. This building remained in use until 1964 when the current courthouse was dedicated. A Justice Department facility was added in 2007 on the west side of the courthouse.
